The history of St. Patrick's Day
Who is saint patrick? St. Patrick wasn’t actually Irish! He was born in Britain in the late 4th century and was kidnapped by Irish raiders when he was 16. After escaping, he later returned to Ireland to spread Christianity. He became a legendary figure and is now the patron saint of Ireland. Why Shamrocks? According to legend, St. Patrick used the three-leaf clover (shamrock) to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) to the Irish people. Today, the shamrock is a symbol of luck and Irish pride! How Did It Become a Celebration? St. Patrick’s Day was originally a religious holiday in Ireland, but Irish immigrants in the U.S. turned it into the fun-filled festival we know today! The first St. Patrick’s Day parade actually happened in New York City in 1762, not Ireland. Now, cities around the world celebrate with parades, music, and even dying rivers green (looking at you, Chicago! Why Do People Eat Corned Beef & Cabbage? Irish immigrants in the U.S. couldn’t afford traditional Irish bacon, so they substituted with corned beef, which was cheaper and more accessible. It became a St. Paddy’s Day staple!
Fun facts: inching on St. Patrick’s Day comes from the belief that wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns—so if you’re not wearing green, they’ll pinch you! The Chicago River has been dyed green every year since 1962. More than 150 countries celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!
