Self-Awareness The ability to see yourself clearly and to know who you are and how others may see you. Why it matters Research shows those with high self-awareness tend to have more confidence & creativity. They also tend to have better decision making skills, healthier relationships, improved communication, greater career success, and strong leadership skills. What should I strive for it? Recognize your emotions, thoughts, behaviors, mindset, and values and have a healthy relationship with them! When emotions arise, identify them. Work to understand how they affect your body physically Recognize how you usually process your emotions/feelings (exercising, breathing habits, hobbies, talking them out with trusted loved ones/professionals, etc.) Why do we have emotions? Biologically, emotions have helped people react and adapt to the world around them for centuries. When something happens in our internal or external environment our brain sends out chemical signals to make us react in certain ways. 3 Components to Self-Awareness: Emotions: Chemical reactions within the body to internal and/or external environment. Feelings: Reactions to emotions: How you react to experiencing sadness. Thoughts: Bits of information that move through your brain, interpreted by your conscious mind. Self-Awareness: To be self-aware, you have to pay attention to your thoughts by observing your thoughts and feelings. Nucleus.

What this could look like: You have a big exam coming up: You have studied very hard but you cannot escape the worry that you will fail the test. You observe your thoughts : You realize you’ve been thinking things such as: “I am going to get a bad grade on this test.”, “I am not smart enough.”, or “No matter how hard I try I will never be good enough.” You Realize: “I am having really negative thoughts about this test which will not help me do better on this exam or in any aspect of my life” You work to let them go : You transition your focus from negative and hurtful thoughts to positive thoughts like: “Practice makes better”, “I am capable of achieving great things”, “I am smart”, etc. and focus on studying more than worrying about any failure you might experience.

Who is saint patrick? St. Patrick wasn’t actually Irish! He was born in Britain in the late 4th century and was kidnapped by Irish raiders when he was 16. After escaping, he later returned to Ireland to spread Christianity. He became a legendary figure and is now the patron saint of Ireland. Why Shamrocks? According to legend, St. Patrick used the three-leaf clover (shamrock) to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) to the Irish people. Today, the shamrock is a symbol of luck and Irish pride! How Did It Become a Celebration? St. Patrick’s Day was originally a religious holiday in Ireland, but Irish immigrants in the U.S. turned it into the fun-filled festival we know today! Services Offered Academic Tutoring Opportunities Who: 9-12th KHS Students What: Weekly 1:1 academic tutoring with snacks and Activity Bus home Where: 102C (Purple Hub) When: Every Tuesday Multiple online tutoring accounts offered FREE to all students! Social-Emotional Learning During our homework labs, we provide instruction and activities to strengthen students' ability to self-regulate, maintain healthy relationships, make safe decisions, and much more! Cultural and Career Exploration / Summer STEM Camp Each month, our students get to explore various cultural and career experiences. In summer of 2024, students explored careers in Physics and Engineering by creating a business plan and building roller coasters. Students got to see their learning in action by a day trip to Six Flags. Test Preparation With the assistance of test preparation materials and instruction provided, we encourage our students to practice their ACT skills during our homework labs and LAA Days. College Preparation During our homework labs, seniors are encouraged to complete college applications and scholarships with staff. During the summer, we also offer a college road trip series. This past July, our students visited 6 different Illinois Universities! Financial Literacy Workshops During the last academic year, we partnered with People’s Bank of Kankakee and Iroquois Federal for 3 workshops learning about: Banking Safety Basic banking habits Budgeting Buying a house Credit and Loans FAFSA Completion Workshops Partnering with KCC’s Financial Aid Department, we invite our seniors & their parents/guardians to join our Homework Labs on 10/21/24 and 01/13/25 to complete their FAFSA applications with trained professionals. Preparación Universitaria Durante nuestras Tutorías Académicas, se anima a los estudiantes del último año a completar solicitudes universitarias y becas con el personal. Durante el verano, también ofrecemos una serie de viajes por carretera a las universidades. Este pasado mes de julio, nuestros estudiantes visitaron 6 universidades de Illinois! Talleres de Educación Financiera Durante el último año académico, nos asociamos con People’s Bank of Kankakee e Iroquois Federal para realizar 3 talleres en los que aprendimos sobre: Hábitos bancarios básicos Créditos y préstamos Presupuestos Comprar una casa Seguridad bancaria Talleres para completar el FAFSA En colaboración con el Departamento de Ayuda Financiera de KCC, invitamos a los estudiantes del grado 12 y a sus padres o guardián a unirse a nuestras Tutorías Académicas el 10/21/24 y el 01/13/25 para completar sus solicitudes FAFSA con profesionales capacitados.
