general tips. Writing Your Scholarship Application Essay 1. Plan ahead Don’t procrastinate! Give yourself plenty of time to review and edit your essay Be aware of the deadline date (i.e.: received vs. postmark) 2. Talk about your accomplishments Be clear and to the point Don’t brag or over-sell yourself 3. State your need What is your financial situation? Do you work? Do you receive support from your family? Do you receive financial aid? 4. Keep it simple Don’t use unnecessary words (i.e., don’t use three words when one will do) Don’t include unnecessary information just to “fill the page” 5. Make it easy on your reader Have someone else read your essay for clarity Write complete sentences and paragraphs Spell check your essay – make sure words are used correctly (e.g.,: “two,” “to,” “too;” or “there,” “their,” or “they’re;” “its” or “it’s,” etc.)

Essay outline pt. 11. Introductory Sentence State your name What quarter you are in at Pierce College 2. Educational Objectives and Career Goals Identify your major Why did you choose this major? What will you do with a degree in this field? What career path have you chosen? Example: I have always enjoyed working with computers and I love to write. I’m pursuing a career in technical writing; this will allow me to pursue both interests - focusing on a viable career and doing something that I enjoy. 3. Brief Background Who are you? (not your name) – family, children, siblings, etc. How did you get to where you are today? What is important to you? Insert extra-curricular interests, volunteer work, hobbies – things that make you stand our or are unusual. Academic Accomplishments: GPA, level of difficulty of courses taken, types of courses taken, etc. Examples: During my free time, I volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club of Tacoma as a Big Sister. Much of my free time is spent with my children, teaching them by example that education is important. I am currently enrolled in 16 credit hours and I work two part-time jobs.

Examples: Although I work two part-time jobs, I find it difficult to meet the financial demands of supporting myself and paying for an education. A scholarship will allow me to continue with school in the fall. My parents provide me with room and board, but because I have younger brothers and sisters, they cannot help me with my educational expenses. The money I earn at the car wash part-time is barely enough to cover my books and supplies. A scholarship would help a great deal. Receiving a scholarship would allow me to reduce the number of hours that I work at the daycare, which would then allow me more time to concentrate on my studies. 5. Conclusion Wrap it up with a simple sentence or two. You can include how your education to date has made a difference to you. End with a “thank you for allowing me the opportunity to apply.”

Don’t worry about the length of the essay at this point. Use your outline as a guide. 1. First Sentence (the most difficult part) Who, What, Where, When, Why Example: My name is Paula Henson and I am (applying, seeking, asking) for a scholarship for the Fall Quarter 2015. My educational objective is to graduate in 2016 with an Associate Degree in Marketing (or transfer to the University of Washington and obtain a degree in Business to pursue a career in Accounting). 2. Now go back and look at what you’ve written. Read it for content and organization of the information. At this point, it is probably too long. What can you eliminate and/or incorporate? Are you redundant? Are you too brief? Does this essay paint an accurate picture of YOU? 3. Spell check, spell check, spell check 4. Have someone else read your essay. Is it you? What do they think? 5. Do you like what it says about you? Reread it one last time and spell check it again! Remember: The essay is your chance to communicate your needs, accomplishments, goals, etc. The scholarship reviewers should be able to read your essay and feel as if they know you personally.

Practice Mindfulness. Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and aware of your thoughts and emotions. It is a tried and tested practice known to help students manage stress and anxiety. Consider setting aside some time daily to practise mindfulness, even if it’s just for a few minutes. There are several mobile apps like Headspace and Insight Timer chat can help you get started with mindfulness. Mindfulness can also be practiced during activities like walking, cooking, and even cleaning. 01

Get Enough Sleep. Sleep is essential for your mental and physical health. As a student, it’s easy to get lost in your academic demands, leaving little or no time for rest. However, getting enough sleep is crucial for you to be able to focus on your studies. Sleep also helps improve mood and regulate stress. Create healthy sleep habits by establishing a sleep routine, avoiding caffeine intake before bed, and sleeping in a quiet, dark, and cool environment. 02

Connect with Others. Feeling isolated can worsen mental health issues. Connecting with others, even if it’s just a simple chat with a friend, can help boost your mood. Joining student clubs and organizations that align with your interests can help you be part of a community. Connecting with people who share similar interests can help you form meaningful relationships, reduce loneliness and improve mental health. 03

Take Breaks . As a student, it’s easy to get caught up in the academic workload, forgetting to take breaks. It’s essential to take a break occasionally and recharge. 8 Reasons Why Financial Literacy is Important. MYDOH

1. It gives kids accurate information. Not teaching your kids about money now can have repercussions down the line. While teens are taught aspects of financial literacy at school, they may also absorb incorrect information from friends, peers, or other adults in their lives with poor money-management skills.

2. It helps them understand the difference between needs and wants. it can be easy to confuse a need with a want. By teaching kids about money, you’ll help them learn how to balance needs and wants without going into debt.

3. It teaches kids and teens the value of money. Teaching financial literacy sets the stage for smart money decisions now, which helps lead to better decisions with bigger payouts.

4. It shows teens how money can work for them. By the time they’re in their early teens, kids may be ready to understand the power of investing and making their money grow through compound interest. Advanced financial literacy conversations could revolve around what different investment choices look like, such as lower-risk investments or higher-risk stocks. If they make some smart investments with their part-time earnings, who knows—maybe your kids will retire earlier than you!

5. It allows teens to practise financial independence—with a safety net. Allowing your tween or teen to pay for their own designer jeans or expensive running shoes will actually help empower them to take charge of their finances as they move through life.

6. It helps teens learn how to avoid debt. Talking about credit is vital in helping tweens and teens understand the importance of money and the consequences of making poor financial decisions. If your teen asks for a credit card, instead of giving an automatic “no,” help them understand that it’s not free money. Stress that a credit card should be paid in full each month because otherwise they will have to pay interest, which can end up costing them much more than the original purchase price—not to mention locking them into a cycle of debt.

7. It teaches teens how to spot a scam. Out in the real world, a savvy consumer attitude is another big part of financial education. Let your kids know it’s okay to ask questions before making a purchase, such as “What is your return policy?” Also encourage tweens and teens to do a little research before purchasing, such as comparing prices and reading online reviews, to help them make informed decisions with their money.

8. Because the future is coming. Kids and teens also need to learn how to be self-sufficient. Having them do regular household chores is one way parents can teach kids how to fend for themselves. Whether you are giving them a pure allowance (a set amount at regular intervals with no conditions), a chore-based allowance, or a hybrid of the two types, financial literacy will give teens the freedom to control their own money and empower them to make better decisions.

Why it’s Important for Parents to share personal money lessons. Effective money management stems from good financial habits, and whether you have good habits or less-than-ideal ones, they are all jumping-off points for teaching kids. So don’t be afraid! As your kids get older, share your personal experiences and the money lessons you learned, for better or for worse. If you’ve had problems sticking to a budget or gotten into credit-card debt, be honest with your teen about your missteps so they can learn from your experience. Share the good stuff, too—modelling financial successes will show your kids that smart money management helped finance some of the nicer things your family enjoys. And because teaching sound financial skills means being open and honest, let your teen know that you’re keeping an eye on their spending.
